Between the demise of the Roman culture and the intentional utilisation of ancient traditions during the Renaissance are those 1000 years situated which came to be known as the Middle Ages. The starting point and the end respectively are defined very differently, though at German universities it is common practice to place these dates at the year 500 and the year 1500.
The covered space is constituted by the then known world – Europe, Asia, Africa – and expanded into the new worlds by the journeys of discovery.
Medieval History at the Hisytory Department concerns itself with the entire era. When demanded by a particular topic or issue it also refers back to the late antiquity or expands its range to the beginning of the Early Modern Period. The curriculum covers the entire subject area.
On an interuniversity level, the Medieval History subject area is interconnected with the interdisciplinary master programme “Atlantic Studies in History, Society and Culture” as well as with the research initiative “TRUST”.
